Chilubi , also Chilubi Island , is a place with 4100 inhabitants (2006 estimate) in the northeast of the Bangweulus swamps in the northern province of Zambia .

It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 66,338 inhabitants (2000 census).

geography

Chilubi is located in the middle of the swamps, in the rainy season on an island, in the dry season on a large arm of the Bangweulus Lake . Most of the district consists of islands. Arid waters are the crucial infrastructure, and the banana boat is the only means of transport besides the mail boat from Samfya .

economy

The district plans to grow coffee and beekeeping on the higher edges. He wants to set up fish farms for the swamps to counteract the loss of income during the annual closed season for fish. The FAO in turn noted that in 1997/98 maize production had decreased by 58% because the supply of seeds and artificial fertilizers was insufficient.

Infrastructure

Chilugi has a hospital that has been equipped with solar panels and an electricity generator since 1996. There are the Santa Maria Mission and elementary and secondary schools. The dominant tribe are the Bisa.
