Kasama

Kasama is the capital of the Northern Province of Zambia . It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 170,929 inhabitants (2000 census).
economy
The city with 94,772 inhabitants (2006 estimate) is around 1380 meters above sea level. It houses a bishopric , a training seminar for teachers and is one of the largest trading centers in the landlocked state . Kasama lives economically from the supply of the province, but also from agriculture. There is the Kalungwishi Sugar Estate and a sugar refinery. Recently, coffee has been grown in the surrounding area, the quality of which is considered good to very good and is suitable for export.
Infrastructure
The entire north of Zambia is supplied via Kasama. There is a gas station, shops, two hotels and a few restaurants. Kasama is on a junction (Mpika-Mbala) of the Tanzam Highway . The TAZARA runs through this city. Kasama has primary and secondary schools, in Misamfu the Zambia Agricultural Research Institute , hospitals and an unpaved, 3,000-meter-long runway. The main language is Bemba .
tourism
Kasama is located in the sparsely populated north of the country. The 2000 census indicates 200,000 residents in the entire province. It is therefore one of the most sparsely populated in Zambia. Miombo forest dominates the landscape. The Chishimba Falls near the city and some prehistoric rock paintings are important for tourism .
history
In 1918, the German " Schutztruppe " under Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, coming from German East Africa , advanced to Kasama. There she learned of the armistice in Europe on November 13, 1918. After the last fighting ended on November 18, 1918, the British and Germans marched to Abercorn, now Mbala in the south of Lake Tanganyika , where Lettow-Vorbeck laid down his arms. There is a monument to him on the road to Mpika.
