Mporokoso , also Mumpolokoso , is a small town with 3491 inhabitants (2006 estimate) in the northern province of Zambia .

Mporokoso is 1150 kilometers north of Lusaka and 169 kilometers west of Kasama near the Mweru Wantipa Lake , but beyond the Mporokosoberge , which geologically belong to the Bangweulu basin . The place is the seat of the administration of the eponymous, very sparsely populated district with 73,929 inhabitants (2000 census).

Social

Mporokoso made history from November 1998 to March 1999, when 25,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo fled the fighting of the civil war there and had to be looked after by the UNHCR . The Mwange refugee camp is 34 kilometers to the west, but the city became the logistical center of UN aid, which has greatly improved the camp's infrastructure after serious supply problems and uprisings in the camp.

A gravel road leads from the asphalt road Mansa - Nchelenge to Mporokoso.

In Mporokoso there is a very large hospital with trained doctors, which in fact supplies the entire, very extensive district. There are schools and a market.

Mporokoso is a transit station on the way to Nsumbu National Park and the waterfalls of the Kalungwishi River 95 kilometers away . These are the Lumangwe Falls , Chimpepe Falls , Kabweluma Falls , Kundabwiku Falls and Mumbuluma Falls . Mporokoso is located on the Chisenga River, a tributary of the Kalungwishi. The Kapumafälle the river Mutoloshi are two kilometers from the Agrarian Training Center. Further on, about 40 kilometers away, there are the small but high Lupupa Falls of the Mukubwe River. 24 kilometers to the southeast are the 15 meter high Pulefalls of the river (western) Luangwa. The surrounding area is characterized by cassava and banana fields and dambo .

history

One of the oldest churches in Zambia is located in the nearby town of Mbereshi. It was built in 1900 by missionaries from the London Missionary Society .
