Geographical location of Mungwi

Mungwi is a place just east of Kasama in Northern Province in Zambia . It is 1,300 meters above sea level and is the administrative seat of the district of the same name with 112,977 inhabitants (2000 census).

history

This district belonged to Kasama until 1997, when it became independent. The Mariannhill Mission Station in Mungwi has existed since around 1910.

economy

Of the 17,057 farmers, five cultivate 315 hectares on a large scale, 130 medium-sized farmers 910 hectares and 16,922 subsistence farmers cultivate 12,458 hectares. The African Plantation Company in Ngoli operates coffee plantations. In the Chambeshiauen is sugar cane grown. Nevertheless, the soils here are considered to be less fertile and crop yields remain below the possible quantities. The supply of artificial fertilizers is insufficient. The hectare yield of subsistence farmers is 3 tons of maize. Livestock farming is considered underdeveloped. Cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and chickens are kept.

Infrastructure

Mungwi is accessible through the asphalt road near Kasama and the TAZARA near Nakonde through highly resilient transport routes. The remaining trails in the district require four-wheel drive or pack donkeys. Mungwi has elementary and secondary schools, the latter being one of the best technical schools in Zambia. There is a 30-bed hospital that was established by the Liebenzeller Mission in the early 1990s . The dominating ethnic group are the Bemba .
