Mpulungu is a port city on Lake Tanganyika in Zambia at an altitude of 788 meters above sea level. It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 67,602 inhabitants (2000 census).

Mpulungu is the only Zambian port. It is a small town with very few shops but a considerable turnover. There is a market.

Infrastructure

The port is called by the MS Liemba every Friday. From there a paved road leads to Mbala and from there further north to Tanzania and south-east to Kasama and on to the Tanzam Highway . A dirt road connects Mbala with the border town of Nakonde on the Tanzam Highway.

The shores of Mpulungu consist of sandy beaches, granite boulders and marshes . The clear lake, 1433 meters deep, offers over 350 species of fish, including the tiger tetra and a number of cichlids as well as numerous ornamental fish for export. With 300 jobs, the fish industry is the town's largest employer. Nsumbu National Park is 60 kilometers west of the lake . Its main town, Nsumbu, was a slave assembly point for shipments across the lake to Zanzibar until the middle of the 19th century . There are different lodges and camps of all categories.

Mpulungu is the starting point for tours to the Kalambo waterfalls.
