Nsumbu National Park

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nsumbu National Park in Zambia covers 2000 km² and lies with a shore area of 100 kilometers in southwest on Lake Tanganyika . The area offers wide sandy beaches, high granite cliffs, quiet bays and dark valleys, one of which is dug 300 meters deep by the river Lufubu , which forms the eastern border of the park and flows into the lake. The vegetation consists mainly of combretum thickets, wild figs and umbrella acacias. To the west of Nsumbu are the game management areas Tondwa (54,000 ha) and Kaputa (360,000 ha).

The biodiversity is still broad and the populations of the animals native to the Nsumbu National Park are recovering, including saber antelopes , wildebeest , eland antelopes , impalas , bushbuck , waterbuck , reed, zebra, buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, warthog , hyena , Jackals, crocodiles and hippos. There are also a number of large bird species such as flamingo and sea eagle.

Nsumbu is almost inaccessible: 1,363 kilometers from Lusaka are not only an enormous distance, but also difficult to drive in the end. Arrival and departure each take a few days. A flight from Lusaka or Ndola to Kasaba Bay / Nkamba Bay Airport with a chartered Cessna is possible, but you have to be picked up there, as well as if you start with a boat from Mpulungu , which has to be reached first - which is the case with the MS Liemba from Tanzania Railways is still best possible, but also via the paved road via Kasama and Mbala .
