Mweru Wantipa Lake

The Mweru Wantipa Lake is located in Zambia in the Northern Province .

description

It is located between Lake Mweru and the southern end of Lake Tanganyika, right on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The extensive Mweru-Wantipa National Park connects to it. The lake itself can only be reached with a local dugout canoe through the marshes surrounding it. Its main tributary is the Choma, which comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lake drains over the Kalungwishi into the catchment area of the Congo .

Flora and fauna

Elephants, crocodiles and buffalo can be found in the national park. The lake is surrounded by wide swampy banks with thick papyrus, which makes it very attractive to water birds. The Sitatunga antelope living in swamps can also be found here.

However, poaching has greatly reduced stocks. Travelers report that they only saw a few warthogs and that even the birds have long been poached.
