Mwange in Zambia

Mwange and Kala are a contiguous UNHCR camp with 30,000 ( International Red Cross 2006) to 43,000 (UNHCR 2006) refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo 34 kilometers west of Mporokoso in the northern province of Zambia .

It is the twelfth largest human settlement in Zambia, the second largest in the north after Kasama .

Mangwe and Kala are extremely densely populated. No place in Africa south of the Sahara takes up so little space with so many inhabitants. The Red Cross writes about people who are traumatized by the overpopulation of the camps and temporary housing. There are now good schools, sports facilities, solar-powered computers, a library, hospitals and, despite the sandy soil, agricultural projects. The people live in traditional grass huts. The center now has a grid infrastructure and permanent buildings. Nevertheless, everyone here depends on the rations of the World Food Program .

90 percent of refugees are ready to return after the 2006 elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
