Pweto is a 918 m high town with 20,000 inhabitants (2006) on the north-west bank of Lake Mweru in the province of Haut-Katanga in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo .

Pweto lives mostly from fishing due to its location on Lake Mweru. A market was built with UN funds in 2004, but the key trading centers are Nchelenge and Kashikishi in Zambia . Another source of income is agriculture. The houses are built from solid bamboo and covered with grass. There is no drinking water supply and no electricity.

To the west rises the Mitumba Mountains , which lie like a mighty bar between the lake and the Congo basin. The outflow of the Luvua is right in front of the site . A fertile plain extends to the north and east, but it largely belongs to Zambia .

Refugees still dominate the city in 2006; 10,000 of them are cared for here by UNHCR .
