Augustin Katumba Mwanke

Augustin Katumba Mwanke (* 1963 in Pweto , Ober-Katanga , † February 12, 2012 in Bukavu ) was a politician from the Democratic Republic of the Congo . He was a close advisor to Joseph Kabila and held various positions. The UN Panel of Experts named him in a report to the United Nations Security Council as one of the most important persons in the plunder of the mining resources of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Life

Mwanke was governor of Katanga province from April 1998, after the end of the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko , until April 2001 . As a result, in 1998 he arranged for the transfer of the state-owned mining company Gécamines , which owned concessions in Katanga, to Ridgepointe Overseas , a company owned by Billy Rautenbach, an investor from Zimbabwe . He supported Kabila after his father was murdered in 2001 and worked in the mining industry in the period that followed. In November 2002, he was forced to leave the government. In July 2003, Kabila appointed him Secretary General of the transitional government. 2002 to 2004 he was a board member of the Anvil Mining Ltd . In January 2004 Kabila appointed him an ambassador ("Roving Ambassador"). In 2009 his uncle became chairman of the state mining company Gécamines. In the 2011 elections he was confirmed as a member of the Pweto MP.

Mwanke was killed in an accident involving a Gulfstream IV on February 12, 2012 when the aircraft shot over the runway at Bukavu Airport . With him, the pilot and the co-pilot and two people died on the ground. The presidential advisor , Marcellin Cishambo , finance minister Matata Ponyo and chief diplomat Antoine Ghonda survived seriously injured. Also on board were the businessman Bertrand Bisengimana and the deputy head of the debt management authority Ogedep, Oscar Gema .
