Papierene Gustl
The Papierene Gustl is the annual award given by Austrian film journalists to Austrian distributors .
history
It has been awarded since 2003. The initiator of the undoped prize - a simple paper certificate - is the Viennese film journalist Herbert Wilfinger (including the Filmindex publishing house; Filmarchiv Austria ). The award winners are the Austrian distributors of the winning films. You can choose from all of the films that are regularly shown in Vienna in a calendar year. The prize is currently awarded in four categories: Papierene Gustl for the winner among all (international) films that have been screened in the calendar year (since 2003) is Papierene Gustl for the best Austrian production, which is filtered out of the overall result (since 2006). Since 2012, the best documentary of the year has also received an award. Also new is the Ungustl category , which is awarded to the biggest annoyance of the film year. All film journalists in Austria are eligible to participate . In 2013 the Papierene Gustl was also awarded for the best international film of the last ten years (2003–2012). The prize went to the Austrian-German-French-Italian co-production from 2009, The White Ribbon (director: Michael Haneke).
Voting procedure
The winning film is determined by counting: each journalist submits a list of his ten best films of the year. The list can be ranked or unordered depending on your preference, the points are weighted accordingly. The prize is awarded by the Association of Austrian Film Journalists DPG in cooperation with the Austrian Film Critics' Guild (AFCG) in the spring of the following year.
Surname
The name Papierener Gustl arose from the initiator's wish for a typical Viennese name (originally only Viennese film journalists were entitled to participate), which was to be distinctly different from the usual glamorous names of other film awards. The figure of "Gustl" shown on the certificate was based on a self-caricature of the now almost unknown director Malcolm St. Clair . At the award ceremony in 2016 (Papierener Gustl 2015), a new Gustl logo was presented for the first time, which had been developed by graduates of the HTL Spengergasse.
Award
The awards will be presented in a Viennese tavern in the presence of film distributors, film journalists, actors and members of the production team for the respective Austrian winning films. The Papierene Gustl has been an award without any financial support from the start, borne solely by the commitment of all members. The Association of Austrian Film Journalists DPG does not charge a membership fee.
