occupation

The Unintentional Kidnapping of Mrs. Elfriede Ott is an Austrian comedy film from 2010 . Directed by Andreas Prochaska , the main actress is the actress Elfriede Ott , who plays herself.

action

Horst is a “ strolling student ” in Graz , who grew up with his grandmother after the death of his parents. After his grandmother became seriously ill, he did many chores for her, including her banking. When she finally died, he continued to draw her pension illegally, thereby financing a four-month vacation in Thailand and a generally relaxed life in the apartment of the deceased grandmother, into which Horst's friend Toni also moved after a while. Toni was co-managing director of a rural dance café for a while and now wants to earn money by renting out a white stretch limousine that he has bought. But so far he has used the large vehicle purely for private purposes. B. for a shepherd's hour with Horst's friend Karin.

Two years after the death of Horst's grandmother, a local politician announced himself to personally congratulate her on a birthday anniversary; Since Toni didn't take care of the household and the mail, Horst only finds the letter a few hours before the politician arrives. What can be done to avoid exposing the fraud? Since care allowance is also received for the grandmother, the excuse that the grandmother is on vacation is dropped. So Horst and Toni have to find a "loan grandmother" as quickly as possible, only for 15 minutes until the politician is gone again. The only way she can do this immediately and “easily” seems to be to “borrow” an old lady from a hospital and bring her back as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the culturally uneducated Toni caught the famous actress Elfriede Ott, of all people, who was hospitalized after a stage accident and was standing around in a wheelchair.

She had previously been sedated by the nymphomaniac nurse Veronika in order to get to the password for her savings account. Your rightly jealous friend Gerry is the car dealer who sold Toni the limousine and is still waiting for his money. Unfortunately he cheated on Hungarian criminals and is now being put under pressure by them. Inspector Kramer, who is called to the hospital, happened to be Gerry's schoolmate.

Due to the large police operation, the "return" of the loaned Ms. Ott is much more complicated than the two had hoped. After they see no way to bring the famous actress back to the hospital unobtrusively, they make a virtue out of necessity and demand a ransom for the "kidnapped" actress. But Otts nephew Reinhard Meinhard Ott is not at all unhappy about the disappearance of his patronizing aunt and does not think about paying anything for her. On the contrary: at a meeting to hand over the ransom, he tries to shoot Ms. Ott.

At the end there is a showdown in Horst's apartment, where everyone gradually arrives. This grotesque final act is partly sung like in an operetta . When Karin confesses her relationship with Toni, Horst even wants to shoot him with Reinhard's gun, but can be stopped. Reinhard Meinhard Ott goes to prison, Toni moves in with Karin, who is pregnant by him, and Frau Ott takes care of Horsts, for whom she also pays all the fines.

background

The film sees itself as the “antithesis” of the Austrian cabaret comedy. It is also the first comedy by director Andreas Prochaska, who most recently celebrated a cinematic success with the “Teenie” horror film In 3 Days You're Dead (2006), which was also followed up (2008), and which was deliberately kept to US models . The actors speak their own (Austrian) dialects . In this comedy, too, Prochaska remains true to this principle, which gives the actors greater authenticity and opportunities for linguistic wit (once a strength of Viennese film ).

For the theater and television actress Elfriede Ott, the film is her first film role. “ Working with the film team was very pleasant, ” says Ott, describing the shooting, “ Director Andreas Prochaska set the punch line with the camera. It's a talent of its own. That someone who has no audience stages it so precisely. “Director Prochaska, on the other hand, when designing the role of Otts, was“ absolutely important that Elfriede Ott is not shown in this film and that you laugh with her, not at her. The other was that it stands for a certain tradition in Austrian theater and for a certain kind of humor. We have tried to integrate that into our story so that something new emerges. "

Michael Ostrowski, in his role as co-screenwriter, also writes that this film should create “something new”. The film sees itself in the tradition of Austrian comedy. These “ good old ingredients ” have to be rediscovered and rewritten again and again, they have to be “ taken and remixed: Qualtinger , Nestroy and Ott lump together with Apatow , Kollegium Kalksburg and the Coen brothers , then something new can come of it. "

As far as the narrative style and visual language of the film are concerned, Prochaska is again based on American models - this time on comedies instead of “ teenage slashers ”. " The staging swiftly switches back and forth between the different storylines and the punch lines are set precisely, " is how a film critic describes these similarities. To this end, Prochaska also uses ideas from the “ newer, weird Heimatfilm ”, for which he mixes cabaret and slapstick, according to a critic of the “ Presse ”.

Post-production was done by Listo Videofilm in Vienna . The film produced under the ORF film / television agreement was funded by the Austrian Film Institute , the Vienna Film Fund , Cine Styria , the State of Styria and the City of Graz .

The majority of the film takes place in the Grazer district of Gries in the area of Annenstraße , Elisabethinergasse and St. Andrä. The Elisabethinen hospital located there is referred to in the film as the fictional " Graz Mitte Regional Hospital ". The cemetery scene at the end shows the Graz-Straßgang cemetery.

Reviews

Elfriede Ott, Andreas Prochaska, Michael Ostrowski and the Kalksburg College

"'The unintentional kidnapping of Mrs. Elfriede Ott' is a refreshingly crude and unabashedly brazen variant of low comedy that surprises with slapstick and puns."

- Dominik Kamalzadeh, The Standard

“Grandiose, exaggerated characters that are so otherworldly that they seem completely real again, a cleverly absurd story and many sensational punch lines - main actor & author Michael Ostrowski (Contact High), director Andreas Prochaska (you are dead in 3 days) and you Team have brought something very special together. Not least because of the gorgeous performance by Elfriede Ott, who, in her first cinema appearance, gleefully picks up on her own image and confidently cemented her reputation as one of the most brilliant Austrian comedians of all time. "

- Dina Maestrelli, SkipWebWorld
