Elfriede "Evi" Ott (born June 11, 1925 in Vienna ; † June 12, 2019 ibid) was an Austrian actress , director , cabaret artist , singer , artistic director , drama school director , Josefstadt - Doyenne and author .

Life

Ott grew up in the 1st district of Vienna , where her father, a master watchmaker, ran his own business. She had a brother four years older who died in the war. A short time after his brother's death, Ott also lost her father when he pulled her off a railroad track where she was caught and he was hit by a train. The trained watchmaker then turned to the theater with the support of her mother.

After taking private acting lessons from the castle actress Lotte Medelsky , she made her debut on May 26, 1944 in Gerhart Hauptmann's Die goldene Harfe at the Vienna Burgtheater , where she was on stage for five years. She then worked at the Landestheater Graz (1949/50), at various Viennese theaters and cabarets, at the Operettenhaus Hamburg (1956) and again at the Burgtheater (1957). In 1958 she moved to the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna, of which she has been a member since then. Her first husband was Ernst Waldbrunn , also a member of the ensemble. She saw her main task in cultivating Viennese comedy and promoting young talent.

With her partner and future husband Hans Weigel - the wedding was on January 9, 1991, just a few months before Weigel's death - Ott initiated the Nestroy Games , which took place every summer until 2012, at Liechtenstein Castle in Maria Enzersdorf near Vienna she herself acted and directed. There she gave her students the opportunity to gain their first stage experience. From 2001, Otts adopted son Goran David was co-director and production manager there.

In 1985 Ott became head of the drama department of the Vienna Conservatory . After her departure, she founded the private drama academy Elfriede Ott together with Gernot Haas in 2005 .

On ORF , she was seen in television series such as Die liebe Familie . In 2010 she played herself in the film The Unintentional Abduction of Frau Elfriede Ott , directed by Andreas Prochaska . In 2013 Ott announced that he would no longer play the theater.

She often performed together with Fritz Muliar and Gerhard Bronner . Ott was the holder of the Austrian professional title of professor and chamber actress .

Elfriede Ott died in June 2019, one day after her 94th birthday. On June 28, 2019 she was buried in the grave of honor of her husband Hans Weigel (1908–1991) in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 33G, number 79).

In the comic Der Blöde und der Gscheite - The Best Double Conferences (Text: Hugo Wiener , Drawings: Reinhard Trinkler ), published in 2014 by Amalthea Signum Verlag , Elfriede Ott made several guest appearances in drawn form. The main character of the red-haired Salome Pockerl in the graphic novel Der Talisman published by Edition Steinbauer in 2015 (text: Johann Nestroy , drawings: Reinhard Trinkler) is also based on the actress.
