Hugo Wiener
Hugo Wiener (born February 16, 1904 in Vienna ; † May 14, 1993 ibid) was an Austrian composer , librettist , chanson , cabaret , screenplay and stage writer as well as pianist .
Life
Hugo Wiener began to study music privately while he was still at school; after school he worked as an extra and répétiteur at the Raimund Theater in Vienna .
From 1928 to 1938 he wrote revues for the Femina cabaret stage , 25 of which were created between 1930 and 1933 in collaboration with the librettist Kurt Breuer (born August 29, 1896 in Vienna; † December 20, 1960 in New York City ).
The Jewish Viennese managed to escape from Vienna in 1938 by accepting an invitation to Bogotá ( Colombia ) with the revue stage Femina . He did not get the passport required for this, however, when Fritz Imhoff issued him a blank check to pay the so-called " Reich flight tax ". He had to leave his family in Austria, who were subsequently deported to Poland . On the trip to Bogota he met the new ensemble member of the "Femina", Cissy (Gisela) Kraner , whom he married in Caracas ( Venezuela ) in 1943 . According to his own account, he would hardly have survived the time in exile , as the fear for his family left behind in Europe and the absurdity of living as a German-speaking author on a Spanish-speaking continent brought him to the verge of suicide several times . Eventually they opened a piano bar in Caracas, with which they had great success, but returned to Vienna in 1948. From 1950 they were ensemble members of the Viennese " Simpl ", where he wrote a large part of the famous double concerts for Karl Farkas and Ernst Waldbrunn . In 1965 there was a break with Farkas.
Hugo Wiener wrote over a hundred cabaret programs and around 400 chansons, which became an experience thanks to Cissy Kraner's unique interpretation. In addition to scripts such as for “The Crazy Couple” on ZDF , he wrote musical comedies and operetta libretti and edited musicals and operettas .
A particular skill of Wieners was to write his texts "tailor-made" for the respective interpreter.
He is buried in a grave of honor together with his wife Cissy Kraner in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 33 G, number 3). In 1997 the Hugo-Wiener-Weg in the 22nd district of Donaustadt was named after him, in 1999 the Hugo-Wiener-Platz in the 4th district of Wieden ; Cissy-Kraner-Platz was named after his wife in 2013 in Wieden .
