The landowner Klapproth would like to see his nephew Alfred, whom he promises to support financially in setting up a business, from the inside of an insane asylum and experience real madmen. Alfred's friend Ernst Kissling recommends that he show his uncle the Schöller guesthouse, whose guests are rather eccentric. Landowner Klapproth, who really thinks the guests are mad, has a lot of fun.

The situation escalates, however, when Klapproth, having returned to his estate, is visited by these supposed madmen.

Performance history

In November of the year of its premiere, 1890, the play was acquired by theater director Karl Blasel for the Carltheater in Vienna .

In Austria, Hugo Wiener’s arrangement for the Wiener Kammerspiele is very well known, especially through two productions by Heinz Marecek which were also broadcast several times on ORF :
