Charlotte Amalie Marie Hagenbruch , married Dieterle (born March 27, 1896 in Chemnitz , † May 20, 1968 in Grabs , Switzerland) was a German actress and screenwriter .

Live and act

The daughter of the businessman Friedrich Carl Otto Hagenbruch and his wife Elsa geb. Seeger attended a secondary school for girls until 1910 and then received her acting training at the Meiningen court theater .

After appearances in Chemnitz and Nuremberg, she came to the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1919 , where she performed Gretchen in Faust , Liza in The Living Body of Tolstoy, Lulu in Frank Wedekind's Die Büchse der Pandora , Elisabeth von Valois in Don Carlos , Ophelia in Hamlet , Desdemona in Othello and Imogen in Cymbeline . She also acted in some silent films.

At this time she met the actor and director Wilhelm Dieterle , whom she married in 1921. She now devoted herself mainly to his career as a film director and founded the Charha-Film production company with him in 1927. She wrote the script for several of Dieterle's early directorial works and worked twice as an actress.

In 1930 she emigrated with him to the USA and worked in Hollywood as a manager and advisor to her husband and as an acting teacher who took on German-speaking emigrants during the Nazi era. She became a US citizen on May 28, 1937. In 1958 she returned to Europe with Dieterle and lived in the Principality of Liechtenstein .

Charlotte Hagenbruch-Dieterle died of renal insufficiency and cardiac arrest as a result of a femoral neck fracture in the Cantonal Hospital in Grabs.
