The ash flows through the community, a stream that was probably lined with ash and gave the place its name. The place name was first mentioned in a document in 824. Eschbach-au-Val belonged to the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Grégoire in Münster from then until the French Revolution (1789–1799) .
In 1793 Eschbach-au-Val received the status of a municipality (as "Eschbach") in the course of the French Revolution and in 1801 the right to local self-government (as "Esbach").
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Eschbach-au-Val belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .
