Geiswasser is a French commune with 306 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region ( Alsace until 2015 ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Colmar-Ribeauvillé , the canton Ensisheim and the Communauté de communes Pays Rhin-Brisach .
geography
Geiswasser is the easternmost commune in the Haut-Rhin department. It is located six kilometers south of Breisach and about 25 kilometers southeast of Colmar . The municipality borders on the Rhine , in the middle of which the border with Germany runs; here is the easternmost point of the Haut-Rhin department. The Rhine Lateral Canal runs parallel to the Rhine .
history
The name comes from an old arm of the Rhine that was called Gießwasser. In the 17th century Geiswasser was officially known as a fishing village. Taxes were paid to the Reichsschultheiß von Breisach and from 1756 to Count Waldner von Freundstein, who finally handed the place over to the French government in 1770. In 1775 Geiswasser was raised to an independent municipality. From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Geiswasser belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .
