Saint-Hippolyte (German Sankt Pilt ) is a French commune with 966 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). The municipality is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Ribeauvillé .

Saint-Hippolyte is located a few kilometers southwest of Sélestat in the Upper Rhine Valley on the eastern slope of the Vosges in the midst of vineyards on the Route du Vin ( Alsace Wine Route ). Part of the Alsace Grand Cru -Location Gloeckelberg lies in the municipality , the rest of the location lies in the territory of the neighboring municipality Rodern .

The municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park . The village itself is on the access road to the Hohkönigsburg, first mentioned in 1147 .

history

The name of the settlement goes back to St. Hippolytus of Rome , whose martyrdom is also depicted in the town's coat of arms and whose relics are kept in the altar of the parish church. Saint-Hippolyte (then called Andaldovillare ) is the birthplace of one of the most influential figures of the second half of the 8th century, Saint Fulrad , the abbot of Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis) near Paris, who also owns the monastery in his birthplace founded.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Saint-Hippolyte belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Rappoltsweiler in the district of Upper Alsace .
