The canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines is a subdivision in Colmar-Ribeauvillé in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region in France .
Surname
Mines means “mines” or “pits” in German. The central area of the canton is identical to the Val d'Argent , the "Silbertal".
history
The canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines was created in 1793 when France was reorganized. From 1871 to 1919 it was in the Rappoltsweiler district and was called Markirch. Until 2015, five municipalities belonged to the canton. On March 22, 2015, the canton was completely restructured. In addition to the previous 5 communes, 25 further communes came from other cantons. These 25 communes belonged to the cantons Ribeauvillé (all 10 communes), Kaysersberg (10 of the 12 communes of the canton) and Lapoutroie (all 5 communes) until 2015 .
geography
The canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines borders the Bas-Rhin department to the north and northeast , the cantons Colmar-2 and Colmar-1 to the southeast, the canton Wintzenheim to the south and the Vosges department to the west .
language
The villages of the former canton of Lapoutroie and three of the five municipalities of the old canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines have always been a French-speaking island in the middle of Alsace. The threatened with extinction which (dt. Welsch ) or Vosgien is a Gallo-Roman subdialect of Lorrain from the group of Langues d'oïl , which u. a. is closely related to Walloon . In the other municipalities, Alsatian is traditionally spoken .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines included the five municipalities of Aubure , Lièpvre , Rombach-le-Franc , Sainte-Croix-aux-Mines and Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines . Its layout corresponded to an area of 108.40 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 6823.

politics
In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the three voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the pairing of Pierre Bihl / Émilie Helderlé (both Union de la Droite | UD) won against Jean-François Abraham / Jacqueline Marie (both FN ) and Nadège Florentz / Henri Stoll (both DVG ) with a share of the vote of 44.87% (turnout: 51.29%).
