The canton Cernay is a constituency in the Arrondissement Thann-Guebwiller , in Haut-Rhin department in the region of Grand Est in France .
history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Belfort District". With the founding of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the Belfort arrondissement. From 1871 to 1919 there was no further subdivision of the Thann district at that time . On June 28, 1919, the canton became part of the newly founded Arrondissement Thann. On March 22, 2015, the canton was enlarged from 11 to 32 municipalities. Of the 11 previous communes in the canton, 5 moved to other cantons. There were also 27 communities from other cantons. These 27 communes belonged to the cantons of Saint-Amarin (all 15 communes), Thann (10 of the 11 communes) and Masevaux (1 commune) until 2015 .

geography
Until 2014, the canton bordered the cantons Soultz-Haut-Rhin and Ensisheim in the arrondissement Guebwiller in the north, the cantons Wittenheim and Mulhouse-Ouest in the arrondissement Mulhouse to the east, the cantons Altkirch and Dannemarie in the arrondissement Altkirch in the south-west the canton of Masevaux and in the west to the canton of Thann .
Today's canton of Cernay borders the cantons Wintzenheim and Guebwiller in the northeast, the cantons Wittenheim and Kingersheim in the east, the canton Masevaux in the south and southwest and the Vosges department in the west .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of Cernay included the eleven municipalities of Aspach-le-Bas , Bernwiller , Burnhaupt-le-Bas , Burnhaupt-le-Haut , Cernay , Schweighouse-Thann , Staffelfelden , Steinbach , Uffholtz , Wattwiller and Wittelsheim . Its layout corresponded to an area of 131.35 km 2 .

politics
In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the four voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the team Annick Lutenbacher / Raphaël Schellenberger (both UMP / LR) won against Stéphanie Faesch / Serge Klein (both FN ) with a share of the vote of 64.58% (turnout: 46.66%).
