Bernwiller ( German Bernweiler, Alsatian Barnwiller ) is a French commune with 1180 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ) and is a member of the Sud Alsace Largue commune .

The municipality of Bernwiller is located in the Sundgau , about twelve kilometers southwest of Mulhouse . It consists of the districts of Bernwiller and Ammertzwiller .

history

Bernwiller was first mentioned in 784.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Bernwiller belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Thann in the district of Upper Alsace .

On January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Bernwiller and Ammertzwiller were merged to form the new municipality of Bernwiller. The basis of the merger was a referendum on October 8, 2015, which resulted in a positive majority in both municipalities. With the merger, Barnwiller moved from the Arrondissement Thann-Guebwiller to the Arrondissement Altkirch and was assigned to the Canton of Masevaux .
