Saint-Cosme ( German Sanct Cosmann ) is a French commune in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Altkirch and the canton Masevaux and is a member of the community association Sud Alsace Largue . With 91 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Cosme is the second smallest of the 377 communes in the Haut-Rhin department.
geography
The commune of Saint-Cosme is located in the Burgundian Gate between Belfort and Mulhouse in the extreme southwest of Alsace on the border with the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . The eastern border of the municipality forms the Traubach , which drains over the Largue to the Ill and thus belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine . The village itself lies on the Rhine-Rhône watershed .
Neighboring communities of Saint-Cosme are Bellemagny in the north, Guevenatten in the east, Bréchaumont in the south, Reppe in the southwest and Vauthiermont in the west.
history
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Saint-Cosme (then Sankt Cosman ) belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .

Attractions
The Saint-Côme et Saint-Damien (St. Cosmas and Damian ) church is one of the oldest in the south-west of Alsace. It was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and is surrounded by fortress walls and centuries-old elms and linden trees. The church is illuminated at night. The coat of arms shows a faithful reproduction of the church.
