history
Bendorf was originally a branch of the parish of St. Mauritius in Ligsdorf . In a document in the Vatican archive from 1302, an Ecclesia Bennendorf in the Elsgau dean's office was mentioned, but it meant the St. Mauritius Church in Ligsdorf. This was confirmed by a document dated December 5, 1346, issued by officials of the Bishop of Basel, concerning a chapel that the community of Bendorf began to build without the permission of the Bishop of Basel. The parishioners cited the great distance to their parish church in Ligsdorf and the difficulties of getting there, especially in rainy weather and in winter. The noble Ulrich Loevenburg , rector of the parish church mentioned, had approved the completion and consecration of the chapel in Bendorf. The first cemetery in Bendorf dates back to 1146. When this became too small, the residents built a new cemetery on a plateau west of the village, facing the rising sun. A new small chapel was built here. After the destruction of the St. Mauritius Chapel in Ligsdorf in 1444, which was too small and dilapidated, the new Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was built on the same site at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. This too soon fell into disrepair and was replaced in 1783 by today's Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in the center of the village of Bendorf. This church is also under the patronage of St. Sebastian , who was invoked against the plague. The legend of the “plague cross” is borne out by the cross opposite the entrance to the cemetery chapel. In memory of the old chapel and the former church, the community built today's cemetery chapel of the Holy Name of Jesus in Bendorf with the demolition material. The east gable of the chapel with a small Gothic opening comes from a niche in the old church.
