Bisel is a French commune with 544 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region . She is a member of the Association of Municipalities Sundgau . The inhabitants are called Biselois (es).

geography

Bisel is located in the Sundgau in southern Alsace , 14 kilometers south of Altkirch and 30 kilometers west of Basel . There are some small lakes in Bisel and the neighboring communities. The Largitzenbach flows through the municipality on its way to Largue .

Neighboring communities of Bisel are Heimersdorf in the north, Ruederbach in the northeast, Feldbach in the east, Mœrnach in the southeast, Mooslargue in the south, Seppois-le-Haut in the west and Largitzen in the northwest.

history

In 1302 Bisol was mentioned for the first time as Bizol . The place name is derived from the Middle High German word Bies ( rushes ). The village was divided into two parts in the Middle Ages by the setting of the boundary along the Largue. One half belonged to the county of Pfirt until 1324 (then to Habsburg ), the other half was a fiefdom of the Montjoie von Hirsingue family.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Bisel belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district . The community was destroyed in the First World War.

Attractions

Today's Saint-Colomban church was built in 1918 in the neo-classicism style. An original church dedicated to Saint Columban in the same place has been documented since 1302, it was enlarged in 1834 and was destroyed in the First World War.

Economy and Infrastructure

Before 1914 there were 40 clog makers in Bisel. Today the community is surrounded by fields, pastures, forests and fish ponds. Main occupations are arable farming and the breeding of domestic cattle. There is also an on-site dairy .

The departmental road D463 connects Bisel with Delle in the west and Folgensbourg in the east.
