Steinsoultz (German Steinsulz ) is a French commune with 769 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the canton of Altkirch and the municipal association Sundgau .

geography

Steinsoultz is located in Sundgau , about 20 kilometers west of Basel , 15 kilometers west of Allschwil and about 7.5 kilometers southeast of Hirsingue between the neighboring communities of Roppentzwiller in the south, Waldighofen in the west and Muespach in the east on a slope above the Gersbach valley. The Lieux-dits (place that bears the name ...) Fosse Richmans, Geissenstuemmler, Kahlhuette, In der Wanne, Schlangenmatten and Sonnenglanz belong to the community. Ten percent of the community area consists of forest.

The community had a stop on the Waldighoffen – Saint-Louis-la-Chaussée railway from 1915. Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1955 and the line closed in 1960.

history

In 1883 a stone ax from the Neolithic Age was found in Steinsoultz .

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1302 as Steinsulze . Like the word " Sülze ", Sultz is derived from the Old High German word sulza , "salt water". Steinsoultz therefore means "mineral spring from a rock". This probably meant the sulfur-containing spring at the foot of the vineyard .

The village belonged to the county of Pfirt until 1324 , then to the Habsburgs until 1648 . In the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 Steinsoultz was awarded to France.

1793 received Steinsoultz (as Steinsultz ) in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and 1801 the right to local self-government. Steinsoultz was part of Germany from 1871 to 1919.
