Bretten is a French commune with 181 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Altkirch , the canton Masevaux and is a member of the community association Sud Alsace Largue .
geography
The municipality is located in the transition area between the Vosges and the Burgundian Gate , roughly in the middle between Mulhouse and Belfort . The Largue tributary Traubach has its source in the municipality .
Neighboring communities of Bretten are Soppe-le-Haut in the north, Soppe-le-Bas and Diefmatten (point of contact) in the northeast, Sternenberg in the east, Bellemagny in the south and Eteimbes in the west.
history
The name of the place probably comes from the Latin pratum (meadow). In 1331 he was mentioned as Bratt , in 1503 as Brethen .
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Bretten belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .
