Roppentzwiller (German Roppenzweiler ) is a French commune with 698 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the canton of Altkirch and the municipal association Sundgau .
geography
Roppentzwiller is located in the Ill valley in Sundgau . Neighboring communities are Durmenach , Muespach , Riespach , Vieux-Ferrette and Waldighofen .
history
The name Roppentzwiller is of Germanic origin and is mentioned for the first time in 1290 as Ropertzwilr in the “red book of the Gnadenthal monastery”, which is in the archive of the city of Basel . The name is made up of " Weiler " and the name " Robert ", which means "Roberts Weiler". It is not known whether the Basel troops besides the surrounding villages Durmenach and Waldighofen also devastated Roppentzwiller after Ulrich II, Count von Ferrette (1227–1275), had become a vassal of the Bishop of Basel , who then enfeoffed the villages .

The municipality's coat of arms shows a silver swan on a red background. The swan goes to the right side of the shield. At the top of the shield is a star with eight golden rays.

Economy and Infrastructure
There is a kindergarten and a primary school in Roppentzwiller. After completing primary school, students attend secondary school in Ferrette .
Important branches of business in Roppentzwiller are agriculture and the breeding of domestic cattle . There was also a mattress factory on site.
The community owned a train station on the Altkirch – Ferrette railway from 1892. Passenger traffic was shut down in 1953. The last freight train ran in 1968, after which the line from Hirsingue was closed. The station building ⊙ has been preserved and is now used as a residential building.
