Mairie Friesen

Friesen is a French commune with 644 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Altkirch arrondissement and the Masevaux canton .

geography

The municipality Friesen in Sundgau located in the extreme southwest of Alsace, bordering the region of Franche-Comté and is about ten kilometers from the border with Switzerland removed. The Larg , a tributary of the Ill, flows through the municipality . From 1910 to 1971 the community owned a train station on the Dannemarie – Pfetterhouse railway line . Passenger traffic ceased in 1965.

Neighboring communities of Friesen are Hindlingen in the west and north, Largitzen in the east, Ueberstrass in the south and Lepuix-Neuf in the south-west.

history

Church of St. Peter and Paul

A local castle is mentioned from the Middle Ages . At that time, Friesen was subordinate to the sovereigns of Altkirch . The place was in connection with the Mairie de la Largue of Ferrette dependent. In the 16th century, a religious war between the Habsburgs and the Catholics escalated in Sundgau . Friesen was not spared from this and the Thirty Years' War . After the end of the war, around 110 people still lived there. Most of the once more than 600 villagers had found refuge in Switzerland.

The Sundgau became French in 1648. King Louis XIV , who reigned from 1661, worked to repopulate the Vallée de la Largue and return devastated areas. Mainly migrants from Switzerland came to the valley.
