Heidwiller (German Heidweiler ) is a French commune with 624 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Altkirch , the canton Altkirch and is a member of the Sundgau community association .
geography
The municipality of Heidwiller is located in Sundgau , five kilometers north of Altkirch and 15 kilometers southwest of Mulhouse . The Rhine-Rhône Canal , which runs parallel to the Largue, runs through the municipality .
history
In documents from the year 1105 the place appears under the name Heytewilare . It was first mentioned in 977.

Attractions
There is a castle in Heidwiller that is first mentioned in documents from 1105. In 1367, 1412 and 1486 it changed hands. The building was not spared from destruction, and so it was reconstructed in the 14th and 16th centuries. In 1789 a prison was built there.
A first church in Heidwiller has already been recorded for the year 977. After its destruction in 1375, it was rebuilt in 1470. The current church dates from 1768, only the tower of the medieval church remained. There were further modifications in 1878 (choir, sacristy extension) and 1901 (roof grilles on the tower).
