geography
The municipality of Valdieu-Lutran is located in the center of the Burgundian Gate between Altkirch and Belfort . The Rhine-Rhône Canal runs through the municipality and overcomes the watershed between the Rhine and the Rhône by means of a staircase of locks .
In the district of Valdieu, the trunk road from Belfort to Altkirch crosses the Rhine-Rhône Canal. The guide ditch that flows into the canal branches off water from the Largue near Friesen to ensure the water supply in the apex of the canal. The parish church is located in the district of Lutran a little further south. The town hall (Mairie) was built between the two parts of the community. Valdieu also had a station on the Paris – Mulhouse line , but this had to be closed when the LGV Rhin-Rhône went into operation. It should be reopened as soon as the capacity of the route allows.
Neighboring municipalities of Valdieu-Lutran are Elbach in the northeast, Retzwiller in the east, Romagny in the south, Magny in the southwest, Montreux-Vieux in the west and Chavannes-sur-l'Étang in the northwest.
