Mairie Emlingen

Emlingen is a French commune with 287 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin département in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the canton of Altkirch and the Sundgau municipal association .

geography

Emlingen is located between Wittersdorf in the west and Tagsdorf in the east, four kilometers east of Altkirch and 14 kilometers southwest of Mulhouse on the D419, called Route de Bâle , in Sundgau . The Thalbach , a tributary of the Ill, flows through the municipality .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1304, the place name is composed of the Germanic name " Emilo " and the place name ending -ingen , which suggests that the place was founded as part of the Franconian conquest . Archaeological finds of burial sites from the Merovingian period (5th to 8th centuries) support this thesis.

The Saint-Morand priory in Altkirch owned a Dinghof in Emlingen in the Middle Ages . The village itself, however, belonged to the Seigneurie Altkirch, which in turn belonged to the Counts of Pfirt until 1324 , to the Holy Roman Empire under the leadership of the Habsburgs until 1648 , and finally to the kings of France. In 1793, during the French Revolution , Emlingen received the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government.

From 1871 to the end of the First World War (1914-1918) Emlingen belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district . The village was evacuated during the First World War.
