Chavannes-sur-l'Étang (German Schaffnatt am Weiher ) is a French commune with 693 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the canton of Masevaux in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region and is a member of the Sud Alsace Largue commune .

geography

The village is located in the southwest of Alsace in the Burgundian Gate on the Rhine-Rhône Canal between Altkirch and Belfort . To the west and north, the municipality of Chavannes borders on the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region .

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1458 under the name of Klein Chaffnat . The church was built in 1772. On June 29, 1815, the troops of the French general Claude-Jacques Lecourbe stopped there.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Chavannes-sur-l'Étang belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .
