Mertzen (German Merzen ) is a French commune with 209 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).
geography
Mertzen is located in Sundgau , ten kilometers southwest of Altkirch and 22 kilometers southeast of Belfort . In the south, a strip of forest borders the village center, in the east there are fields and in the west the Largue flows through the municipality. Neighboring communities are Saint-Ulrich , Strueth , Hindlingen and Fulleren .
From 1910 to 1971 the community owned a train station on the Dannemarie – Pfetterhouse railway line . Passenger traffic ceased in 1965.
history
The name Mertzen is derived from Maurice , the saint to whom the church is dedicated. In the 12th century Mertzen is still called Morenze in a document . At that time the parish already existed. The first church on site belonged to the priory of Saint-Ulrich.

Attractions
The Théobald Bilger Chapel was built by Théobald Bilger (1813-1894) in 1878 after he had made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem .
The choir tower of the medieval church of Saint-Maurice still exists , the lower part of which is Romanesque and the upper part Gothic . The nave and today's choir were built around 1780. The church was restored in 1965. The organ was set up in 1793 from parts of the organs of the Lützel monastery , but replaced by a pneumatic organ in 1924.
economy
The main economic activities in Mertzen are farming , breeding of domestic cattle and fruit growing . There is also a sawmill .
