Dannemarie ( German Dammerkirch ) is a French commune with 2,255 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the canton of Masevaux and is a member of the community association Sud Alsace Largue .
geography
The municipality is located in the area of the Burgundian Gate in Sundgau , between the cities of Mulhouse (about 27 kilometers northeast) and Belfort (about 23 kilometers west). In Dannemarie the Ill tributary Largue (German: Larg) changes its course towards the northeast. The now wider valley is used by the Rhine-Rhône Canal .
history
In 1016 the place is mentioned as Danamarachiricha , which means Church of the Dominatrix (Mistress) Maria . In the course of history the name changed several times and took partly French and partly German forms. In the 13th century and until 1324 the place belonged to the county of Pfirt (Ferrette), until 1648 to the House of Habsburg and then it passed to Cardinal Jules Mazarin .
After the French Revolution , Dannemarie belonged to the Arrondissement of Belfort . In 1871 it was assigned to the German district of Altkirch and is now part of the French department of Haut-Rhin.
During the First World War , French troops moved into the town as early as August 1914, which was then also the military headquarters during the fighting on the nearby front.

In Dannemarie the departmental roads D 103 ( Thann - Delle ) and D 419 ( Belfort - Altkirch - Basel ) cross. Dannemarie owns a train station on the Paris – Mulhouse railway line , where the Dannemarie – Pfetterhouse railway branched off . The latter was put into operation in 1910 and shut down in 1970. Today, TER Alsace and TER Franche-Comté trains stop at the station .
