The TER Franche-Comte is a transport company that for the French region Franche-Comte the logistics of the local public transport (PT) provides. Like the other TER companies in France, it is co-financed by the regional government and operated by the state railway SNCF .

TER Franche-Comté operates its lines on an area of 16,200 km² and stops at 65 train stations. Each train station has to cover an area of 250 km² on average. The boundaries of the traffic area form the department Doubs (25) Jura (39) Haute-Saône (70) and the former for Alsace belonging Territoire de Belfort (90).

The regional administration considers the collaboration between the department and the SNCF, which began in September 2000, to be the very first in France. In fact, the first cooperation efforts had been successful in Alsace since 1998. In 2002, the agreement concluded between the regional government under the then President Jean-Francois Humbert and the SNCF finally came into force for a period of five years, stating that the SNCF would be responsible for regional rail transport for the department. On December 21, 2006 an extension to 2012 was decided.

With the signing of the contract, the costs for the modernization of the rolling stock were fixed: It was already known at the beginning that 85 million euros had to be spent by 2009, of which, however, more than half was co-financed by the state. The measures included:

  • Acquisition of nine “ Autorail à grande capacité ” (5 X 76500 and 4 Z 27500 ) for 33 million euros
  • Modernization of several Z 11500 (Z 2) , “Rames réversibles régionales” (RRR) and Corail train units
  • best possible upgrading of the stations and stops
  • Improvement of the frequencies, particularly for school traffic (with the exception of the Besançon – Vesoul, Besançon – Pontarlier and Lons – Dole routes)

With the extension of the contract to cooperate some new trains were purchased, more AutoRail à grande capacité, and in 2008 two shuttle train Corail , these have been completely renovated from older rolling stock and equipped with air conditioning. By the end of 2009, 89 percent of the vehicle fleet from before 2002 should have been replaced or completely renovated.

In addition, with the help of the state, the stations have been modernized and a regular timetable has been introduced since December 2011, which ensures departure times are easy to remember.
