Courtavon ( German originally Ottendorf ) is a French commune in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). The municipality has 368 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and covers 9.6 square kilometers. Courtavon is a member of the Sundgau community association .

geography

Courtavon is located on the upper Largue in the southern Sundgau . The border with Switzerland in the west is just under 1.5 kilometers away. Ferrette in the northeast is about 13 kilometers away, Altkirch ( sub-prefecture ) to the north is about 25 kilometers and Mulhouse about 45 kilometers away. It is around 38 kilometers to Basel in the northeast.

Neighboring communities are Liebsdorf in the northeast, Oberlarg in the east, Levoncourt in the south, Vendlincourt in the southwest and Bonfol in the northwest.

To the northeast of the village center there is a campsite at Le Grand Étang , a lake at 438 meters above sea level.

history

The village has been known as Cortamund since 1179, later also as Ottendorf .

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Courtavon belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .
