The German School Barcelona is a German school abroad in the Spanish city Esplugues de Llobregat , a direct suburb of Barcelona . It was founded in 1894 by Otto Amtsberg, the pastor of the local evangelical community. It still exists today and is run as a bilingual grammar school.
history
After the school, which was also previously non-denominational, was passed on to the sponsorship of a school association in 1901, the first house of its own was built in 1904. The school building in Carrer Moya stood on the site of the Protestant church that had been built a year earlier. When it opened, 81 students attended the school, in 1908 there were already 203 and an extension was necessary. Since 1910, the building has also been used for adult education, and evening courses in German were offered.
In 1912 the school was classified as a Realschule by the German school authorities. A second extension in the same year became necessary due to the increase in the number of students to 363, and in 1928 a third extension was added for the now 600 students.
From 1936 to 1939 the school was evacuated during the Spanish Civil War , while the pupils were housed at the Otto Kühne School and the pupils at the Bodelschwingh Gymnasium in Herchen .
In 1941, 1,000 students attended the German School . This time the church building even had to give way to the fourth extension. On June 5, 1945, the school was closed under pressure from the Allies , with whom Spain had committed itself to cooperation in 1945 on the basis of the London Declaration .
In 1947 two other German schools were founded instead, the Escuela Miramar and the Colegio Alberto Magno , which were merged into the Colegio Alberto Magno in 1950 . In 1950 the German School Barcelona was reopened and recognized by Germany as a school, in 1955 also for the acceptance of the Abitur . Since 1973 it has also been possible to take a German-Spanish Abitur examination here.
In 1977 a new school building was built in the suburb of Esplugues de Llobregat. The first Spanish classes were also established here.
