Esplugues de Llobregat [ əsˈpluɣəs ðə ʎʊβɾəˈɣɑt ] is a Catalan city ​​in the province of Barcelona in northeastern Spain . It is in the comarca of Baix Llobregat . It belongs to the metropolitan area Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona .

Location and climate

Esplugues is located on the lower reaches of the Llobregat in the metropolitan area of Barcelona . Due to its location at the foot of the Serra de Collserola mountain range , it is regularly endangered by flooding after heavy downpours. The climate is Mediterranean with hot summers and little rainfall; but this is concentrated in spring and autumn.

Although the first documented mention of Esplugues comes from the 10th century, finds in neighboring places ( Sant Just Desvern , Cornellà de Llobregat ) suggest that the area of ​​Esplugues was also inhabited before.

Culture

On July 22nd, the feast of the patron saint, Santa Magdalena, is celebrated. The Festa Major takes place on September 21st in Sant Mateu .

In Esplugues there is the American School of Barcelona and, since 1986, a Japanese school . In 1977 the German School Barcelona built a new school building. The school's first Spanish class was also established here.

From 1964 to 1973 , over a hundred films - most of them westerns - were shot in the subsequently demolished studios and outdoor areas of "Esplugues City", which the Balcázar brothers' production company had built there .

Economy and Transport

Espluges is located at the intersection of three highways, the motorway to Martorell , the national road N-II to Madrid and the connecting road from Cornellà to Fogars de Tordera . The city is connected to the metropolis by the Barcelona tram ( Trambaix line ).

Until the 1950s, Espluges de Llobregat formed the fruit and vegetable garden of Barcelona. Today agriculture only plays a marginal role. Almost the entire district area is occupied by industry and residential buildings today.

In parallel with the population growth through immigration , the industrialization of the city began in the 1950s. The most important branches today are the chemical-pharmaceutical and electromechanical industries as well as freight forwarding. The ceramic industry , which was always represented in the city because of the high clay soil, has now completely disappeared. The Firesplugues trade fair has been held annually since 1988 .
