The Serra de Collserola is a low mountain range with rolling hills of low altitude in the province of Barcelona in Catalonia ( Spain ). The ridge is part of the Catalan coastal mountain range, the Serralada Litoral Catalana , and covers an area of about 11,000 hectares . It is a local recreation area and the “ green lung ” for the residents of Barcelona.
location
The Serra de Collserola is bounded by the Llobregat rivers in the west, Besòs in the east, the coastal plain of Barcelona (city of Barcelona) in the south and the Vallès plain in the north. Although a large part of the Serra is designated as a nature park, the area is criss-crossed with settlements and traffic routes, especially on the axis Barcelona - Sant Cugat del Vallès .
mountains
The highest point is Barcelona's local mountain , the Tibidabo (512 meters) with the Sagrat Cor church , an amusement park and the Fabra observatory . Right next to it, on the Turó de la Vilana (445 meters), stands the 288-meter-high Torre de Collserola (name of a television tower ), built by the British architect Norman Foster for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Other important elevations are the Turó del Puig (477 meters), Turó de Can Pasqual (470 meters), Turó del Castellví (468 meters), Puig d'Olorda (436 meters), Turó de Valldaura (421 meters), Turó de la Magarola (431 meters).
Flora and fauna
Areas with low Mediterranean vegetation ( maquis ) interrupt the Serra de Collserola , which is mainly forested with holm oaks and Aleppo pines . Although close to the big cities, the ridge is home to a rich fauna . Here live wild boars , foxes , weasels , squirrels , hare and hedgehog . Numerous species of birds such as the crested tit , sparrowhawk , hawk and tawny owl can also be found.
particularities
A motorway with several tunnels (the Túnels de Vallvidrera ) between the towns of Sant Cugat and Barcelona crosses the ridge in a north-south axis and divides the Serra de Collserola in two halves.
The ruins of the former Casino de la Arrabassada are located on the grounds of the municipality of Sant Cugat .
Natural park
In 2010 the existing park of Collserola with an area of 8,295 hectares was designated as a nature park by the Generalitat de Catalunya .
