The Torre de Collserola is a 288 meter high television tower in Barcelona and the tallest in Spain. It stands on the edge of the 512 meter high Tibidabo , the highest point of the Serra de Collserola ridge in the north-west of the city.
The tower was built as a telecommunications converter during the Summer Olympics in Barcelona (1992). The design comes from the well-known British architect Norman Foster . Instead of the round cross-section usual for television towers, the floor plan of the tower cage is a bulbous triangle . The structure is anchored to the ground with nine thick holding ropes, which are braced at the lower three corners of the tower cage. This reinforcement made it possible to make the tower shaft very slim, with a diameter of only 4.5 meters, which makes the tower look very light and elegant. Without the holding ropes, a tower shaft with a diameter of around 25 meters would have been necessary.
The base of the tower is 425 meters above sea level. d. M. on the Turó de Vilana (a secondary peak of the Tibidabo). The height of the tower to the top of the antenna is 288 meters. The tower cage consists of 13 floors and is between 84 and 152 meters above ground and mainly houses technical facilities. On the tenth floor (135 meters above ground or 560 meters above sea level) there is a public viewing platform, which is reached via a panoramic elevator attached to the outside of the tower shaft.
Inside the tower there is another, non-public elevator for maintenance work on the technical floors.
The tower was opened on June 27, 1992 after a construction period of 24 months.
Another telecommunications tower in Barcelona is the Torre de comunicacions de Montjuïc designed by the Spanish star architect Santiago Calatrava , which was also built for the 1992 Olympic Games.
