The 512 meter high Tibidabo is (together with Montjuïc ) one of the two local mountains of Barcelona . It is the highest peak in the Serra de Collserola mountain range , which stretches in northwestern Barcelona between the Besòs and Llobregat rivers.

In normal weather, the Tibidabo is clearly visible from all over the city of Barcelona and offers a panoramic view of the city. The Sagrat Cor Catholic Church , a well-known amusement park and the striking television tower Torre de Collserola are located on the Tibidabo . The Tibidabo can be reached via a road and a funicular ( Funicular del Tibidabo ) that lead up the mountain.

Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor

The Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor ( Catalan for Temple of Atonement of the Sacred Heart ) is a church on the top of the mountain. It was built in various construction phases between 1902 and 1961 based on a design by the architect Enric Sagnier in the neo-Gothic style based on the model of the Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre church in Paris . It is crowned by a bronze statue of Christ that looks out over the city towards the sea with outstretched arms. With an elevator and stairs it is possible to get to a platform below the statue.

amusement park

The amusement park ( Parc d'atraccions Tibidabo ) extends over an area of seven hectares . It was built by the pharmacist Salvador Andreu and put into operation in 1901 together with the cable car. The park is aimed primarily at families. The amusement park has retained many older facilities - some of them since it was founded - and therefore exudes a nostalgic charm , roughly comparable to the Vienna Prater . After financial problems, the park was taken over by the city of Barcelona in 2000.

Torre de Collserola

The 288 meter high television tower Torre de Collserola was built for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . The design comes from the British architect Norman Foster . A public viewing platform is located on the top floor of the tower cage at a height of 135 meters above ground.

origin of the name

The name of the mountain comes from a Latin Bible quote in connection with the temptation of Jesus by the devil . According to Matthew 4: 8, the devil brought Jesus "up a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world ..." . Then (Matthew 4: 9) he offered Jesus: "... haec omnia tibi dabo si cadens adoraveris me." ( "... I will give you all this if you prostrate yourself before me and worship me" ).
