Software Freedom Day ( SFD ) is an annual, global event that celebrates the success of free and open source software and provides information about its benefits. The event is probably the largest free software event in the world. The local events vary greatly in scope and character.

For example, copies of the Open CD were distributed at the events . This is a compilation of selected free software for Windows. The sponsors of the event include the companies Google and Canonical and the Free Software Foundation . The SFD takes place on the third Saturday in September.

history

The SFD was first celebrated in 2004 . On August 28, 2004, over 70 teams worldwide took part.

  • On September 10, 2005: approx. 300 teams
  • On September 21, 2006: approx. 330 teams
  • On September 15, 2007: approx. 260 teams
  • On September 20, 2008: approx. 500 teams
  • on September 19, 2009: approx. 400 teams
  • on September 18, 2010: approx. 400 teams
  • on September 17, 2011: approx. 440 teams
