The main reasons for the enormous population growth in the last decades of the 20th century were immigration from the surrounding rural communities, good transport connections and the comparatively high rental prices in the city of Barcelona.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants lived largely on self-sufficiency from agriculture, which also included viticulture and cattle breeding to a small extent. The former small town served as a center for trade, handicrafts and trades of all kinds; in addition, the pilgrimage also played a not insignificant role. An industrial park with Televisión Española , Hewlett-Packard and other well-known companies was built along the north-south AP-7 motorway at the end of the 20th century . The insurer Catalana Occidente is headquartered in Sant Cugat del Vallès.

history

The place was built on the site of a Roman fort ; The existence of a small early Christian church from the 4th or 5th century was also proven during excavation work. In the 8th or 9th century a small monastery was built, which was later subordinated to the Bishop of Barcelona and flourished from the 11th to 14th centuries. In 1835 the monastery was closed.

Attractions

  • The monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès with its church and the partly medieval cloister ( claustro ) is the most important historical and cultural attraction of the city.

Patron saint

Mosaic in the Chapel of St. Medir in St. Cugat

On March 3rd in Sant Cugat del Vallès is the holiday of Sant Medir, the patron saint of the place. The legend goes back to the time of the Romans (303 AD, Emperor Diocletian), who, as is well known, were initially very reluctant to believe in Christianity. Persecution of Christians also took place in Catalonia, just think of Saint Cugat, who gave the place its name. They persecuted the then Bishop of Barcelona with the name Sever, who quickly ran away and fled over the Tibidabo to Sant Cugat. By the standards of the time, it was a day trip, the tunnel did not yet exist.

He finally reached a side valley and found the farmer Medir in his field sowing broad beans. While he hurried on to find a suitable hiding place, the Romans were already on his heels. They went to the poor Medir and asked him if he had seen a bishop on the run. Medir was also a Christian man and did not want to reveal his shepherds. On the other hand, people were already believers in authority back then and so he waved his way out of the affair with peasant wisdom: he said he saw the bishop when he was planting his beans. During this short time, however, the beans had grown at a tremendous rate and turned his field into an unmistakable green. So in the absence of turbo fertilizer it was a miracle. The Romans, on the other hand, were naturally suspicious of this inconsistent story and killed him. According to legend, they also found the bishop and put an end to him too.

Nevertheless, the story does not end tragically. Medir was an honest man and a miracle happened. A chapel was built at the site of the event and a pilgrimage was made there once a year.
