Catalana Occidente is a listed Spanish insurance company. The company found its origin in a fire protection insurance from Catalonia founded in 1864 called La Catalana . This insurance was later taken over by Occidente and the merged company operated as Grupo Catalana Occidente . According to the company, Catalana Occidente was the first Spanish insurer to use computers to manage its insurance business in the early 1960s. In 1971, the company inaugurated its new headquarters in Sant Cugat del Vallès near Barcelona. The architecture of the building, which is reminiscent of a three-pointed star, was taken up in the new logo of the insurance company. The company's shares have been traded on the stock exchange since 1997 and Catalana Occidente was part of the IBEX Medium Cap index until December 2018 . The company acts as a conventional primary insurer, operates through its subsidiary Atradius , which was majority acquired in 2010, but also in credit insurance .
