The Austrian Federal Government Klaus II was formed after the National Council election on March 6, 1966 , as an ÖVP sole government, since the ÖVP had achieved an absolute majority in the elections and negotiations with the SPÖ over a new-style coalition had failed. Federal President Franz Jonas appointed the cabinet on April 19, 1966 . Two days after the National Council election in 1970, in which the SPÖ had overtaken the ÖVP without attaining an absolute majority, the cabinet resigned on March 3, 1970 and was entrusted by the Federal President with the continuation of business until April 21, 1970.
The Klaus II government has remained the only sole ÖVP government of the Second Republic to this day; After her dismissal, no ÖVP politician was able to achieve the position of Federal Chancellor for thirty years. Klaus II was the first Austrian government ever to have a woman in the cabinet: Social Affairs Minister Grete Rehor . With the end of the Klaus II cabinet, Josef Klaus withdrew from politics.
