The Austrian federal climate government was formed without prior election to the National Council. The SPÖ - ÖVP coalition government succeeded the Vranitzky V cabinet when the latter resigned in early 1997. As in this cabinet, some ministers have now been replaced again.
Federal President Thomas Klestil appointed the cabinet on January 28, 1997 . In the 1999 National Council election , the SPÖ lost almost 5% of its votes. No agreement could be reached on the continuation of the SPÖ- ÖVP coalition, as the ÖVP now preferred to work with the FPÖ . The Climate Cabinet resigned on February 4, 2000 when the Federal Bowl I government was appointed.
