The Austrian federal government Kreisky III was formed after the National Council election on October 5, 1975 , which had confirmed the absolute SPÖ mandate majority. At first it was no different from the Kreisky II cabinet; During her term of office, the ministers in six departments were replaced, sometimes twice. The first government reshuffle took place on October 1, 1976, the second on June 8, 1977.

Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger appointed the cabinet on October 28, 1975 . Three days after the National Council election on May 6, 1979 , which again confirmed the absolute majority of the SPÖ mandate, the cabinet resigned on May 9, 1979 and was appointed by the Federal President until June 5, 1979 when the Kreisky IV government took office Business entrusted.
