Gerhard Weissenberg

Gerhard Weißenberg (born May 9, 1920 in Ybbs an der Donau ; † October 1, 1980 in Vienna ) was an Austrian lawyer and politician ( SPÖ ).

Gerhard Weißenberg was born in Ybbs as the son of a lawyer. The father was of Jewish descent and was active in the Social Democratic Workers' Party in Austria. After graduating from high school in 1938, he had to serve in the German Wehrmacht until 1940 , when he worked as a factory worker. After the war he completed his law studies .

From 1950 to 1976 he was head of the social policy department in the ÖGB , from 1968 to 1976 deputy director of the Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees for Vienna and president of the main association of Austrian social insurance institutions .

From 1976 to 1980 he was Federal Minister for Social Administration, during which time he was also elected President of the International Labor Organization (ILO / ILO).

He rests in an honorary grave in the Baumgartner Friedhof (group DA, number 66) in Vienna.
