Anton Proksch (born April 21, 1897 in Vienna ; † April 29, 1975 there ) was an Austrian trade unionist and politician ( SPÖ ).

Live and act

After elementary school, Anton Proksch attended community school and then did an apprenticeship as a typesetter .

In 1919 he became an employee of the Austrian Trade Union Commission. In 1924 he became secretary of the youth department of the Federation of Free Trade Unions . In 1935 he was arrested for allegedly preparing for high treason and sentenced to prison at the socialist trial. From 1936 and during the National Socialist rule, Proksch was again active in the profession he had learned.

Immediately after the end of the war, he was again union and politically active. In 1945 he was secretary of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions and a year later he was promoted to general secretary of the organization. From 1945 to 1966 he was a member of the National Council of the SPÖ and between 1956 and 1966 Federal Minister for Social Administration .

The Anton Proksch Institute in Vienna, a therapy center for alcohol and drug addicts, was founded in 1956 and named after him after his death. In 1982 a residential complex in Grinzing in Anton Proksch-Hof , in 1963 the Anton-Proksch-Haus on the Ladenbergalm and the Anton-Proksch hiking hostel of the Wiener Kinderfreunde on the Hohe Wand were named after him.

His grave of honor is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 C, number 33). In 1977 he was posthumously awarded the Badge of Honor for Services to the Liberation of Austria .
